Wetterlings hand forged axes are world renowned for their performance and durability.

Crafted in much the same fashion for over 100 years, this is the last axe you will ever need to buy.

Product Features:

Powerful axes made for splitting logs and large chunks of wood.

Splitting axes are meant to split the log along the grain, not cut it, as a result the cutting edge is shaped at an aggressive angle and the bit is ridged.

This simple design feature makes splitting easier and ensures the axe doesn’t get stuck in the wood.

The splitting maul has a tempered poll that can be used in combination with a splitting wedge that is both twisted and rippled to deal with the most gnarled logs.

Hand forged from Swedish quality steel alloyed from iron, carbon, silicon, manganese and vanadium.

This special axe steel alloy makes high quality hardening possible.

Hand forging uses presses that deliver many blows, making the axe edges stronger than if they were drop forged.

After grinding, hardening and tempering, Wetterlings axes keep a Rockwell hardness of 57-58°.

This attention to detail is the main reason Wetterlings axes hold a keen edge with good "sting" longer than most axes.

Each axes comes with a leather blade cover fashioned with brass grommets and snaps.

Pre-drilled lanyard hole on each handle.

The handles are lathed from prime American brown heartwood hickory, the wood of choice for stress resistance in tools subject to heavy blows.

Each handle is securely fitted in the eye of the axe with wood and steel wedges.

A handforged Wetterlings is the product of genuine Nordic craftsmanship.

Every axe that leaves the factory in Storvik, Sweden has its own unique character and bears its own distinguishing mark.

Each Wetterlings is truly one of a kind.

The history of Wetterlings started over 100 years ago. On a spring day in 1882 the engineer Otto Wetterling disembarked from a train in Storvik, Sweden. For several years he had studied the production of axes in the USA. His brother, Sven Axel Wetterling, had earlier started producing axes on a small scale in a forge in Storvik. His company was named S. A. Wetterlings Manufaktur, or, in short, S. A. W.

Otto Wetterling immediately became supervisor. Using ideas gained from the new country, and craftsmanship and experience from the old, the brothers created a piece of legendary industrial history. Since then the forge has been in uninterrupted use for almost 125 years.

Today, 10 people proudly continue the tradition of producing world class axes. The forge is in Storvik twenty kilometers west of Sandviken. An area in Sweden where people since the time of the vikings have worked with iron.

Wetterlings are slowly forged in a forge press. This is a methodical task that demands patience and time, and is entirely dependent upon the skill of the blacksmith. The result is an axe that has a very fine grain structure. After having being hammered for a long period of time the steel becomes extremely strong and can be ground to a high level of sharpness.

When matched with the very best hickory handles, they are tools of the highest quality in terms of durability and performance. A Wetterlings is not only an axe – it’s a friend for life.
