It is very important that the correct mounting hardware is used to attach each fitting to your boat. In the rigorous marine environment it is not enough that the fastenings themselves are of marine quality, they must also be close in the Galvanic Series to the metal the fitting is made from. If they are not similar, the less noble metal will corrode.
The following information shows the combinations that are suitable and those that are not.
For bronze fittings, silicon bronze or stainless steel fasteners are suitable, brass fasteners are not suitable.
For brass fittings, brass or silicon bronze fasteners are suitable, stainless steel is not suitable.
In addition to matching the proper materials, it is also important to use the appropriate type of fastener.
In most cases, fittings that will take a heavy prolonged or snatch load should be bolted rather than screwed, with reinforcing pads underneath to spread the load.
