Breaking load is the static load at which total failure, by rupture or deformation, occurs.

Safe Working Load is the maximum static load the product can endure without deforming. Prudence dictates not exceeding 80% of the functional limit.

Precision forged in France.
Widely recognized for their first-rate materials, design and workmanship, Wichard products are highly documented, ISO 9001 certified, and backed by a 5-year warranty.

All Wichard hooks are hot forged and passivated, providing exceptional reliability, eliminating internal structural defects and protecting against oxidation.

Wichard's HR, high resistance, 17.4 PH alloy is one of the strongest available in marine hardware. This slightly magnetic alloy is used in their top-end products.

Because Wichard hooks are forged, when they are stressed to their limits they will show signs of deformation first and will never break suddenly.

Only forging creates a superior steel product, by increasing its elasticity and maximizing the steel's internal strength.

Most marine hardware can be divided into two distinct groups these days.

Cheap junk made with little, if any, thought to the impact its production has on the environment or the workers involved - or high quality gear made from materials designed to last, by companies that care.

We prefer to carry the latter.

Plastic and nylon parts are durable for a while and they satisfy price sensitive shoppers. Their production, however, creates numerous toxins, and eventually enough sunshine or stress will cause them to break.

Chrome, nickel, and zinc plating can protect metal surfaces for years, but their initial production, especially in third-world countries can cause devastating harm.

Painted parts are effective for a while, but paint production is usually nasty, and as it chips and goes over the side, paint carries its own poisons along.

At greenboatstuff.com we choose to carry aluminum, brass, bronze, stainless steel, and occasionally wood hardware.

In an imperfect world we know these choices are not entirely without their faults.

In our opinion, however, they satisfy our criteria for high quality, long lasting products that do the job well while inflicting minimal, if any, harm.

Stainless Steel Trigger Release Standard Bail Snap Shackle by Tylaska > Swivel Eye > 4" Size > 17-4 PH High Strength S.S. > Model T-12

- Unlike many other manufacturers, Tylaska pursues a different product mission. Instead of looking for ways to cut corners and skimp on quality, Tylaska shackles are aimed to be the best possible product made based upon physics and not economics.

Many extra and exotic processes are used differentiating the Tylaska shackle from the normal piece of hardware.

First, every structural part is run through a procedure called hipping (high isostatic pressurization), which is a process normally only reserved for spacecraft and critical aerospace parts. This consists of heating the component to near melting point in a vessel containing inert gas. The gas is then pressurized and the softened component is squeezed and compressed to seal and collapse any underlying void or imperfection.

The result is a very dense and uniform material similar to a wrought or forged component, but in a shape or configuration impossible with forging. Next, heat treating is done in vacuum furnace to eliminate any chance of contamination. Several testing processes are implemented such as zyglo and magnifluxs to identify any microscopic surface flaws or cracks that could go unseen by the unaided eye.

Each component is then run through a salt corrosion test to identify any contamination or chance for staining and ultrasonically cleaned afterwards.

Next, each and every snap shackle is tension pulled to 50% of its breaking strength and also released under load.

This is not a random statistical process, every single snap shackle is pull tested and verified as to holding the stated working load.

After proof testing, the shackle is hand buffed and then cleaned again.

Finally, one last thorough hand inspection is done on each item to verify that nothing is left unchecked.

The result is a shackle that could pass as a piece of jewelry and exceeded the specifications for a part used in the space shuttle.

Tylaska shackles are not the least expensive, but they are quite possibly the best. Some people may call it overkill but we call it security and peace of mind for applications where failure is not an option

Product Features:

Easy to release, even under full load.

Easily opened and closed using only one hand.

Optimized for maximum strength using the latest finite element software.

Manufactured, designed and assembled completely in the U.S.A.

Incredible breaking strengths at very light weights.

The Standard Bail shackles provide ample room for attaching a line while keeping weight and overall shackle length to a minimum.

Ideal for halyards and sheets.

Available in several sizes.

Tylaska T5 Snap Shackles are perfect for small boat applications requiring high strength and low weight. They have a breaking strength of 5,000 lbs and weigh just 2.2 ounces in the standard bail configuration. Ideal for J-24s, Mumm 30s and similar boats.

Tylaska T8 Snap Shackles are perfect for applications requiring high strength and low weight. They have a breaking strength of 8,000 lbs and weigh only 3.5 ounces in the standard bail configuration. Ideal for the 24 to 36 foot sailboat.

Tylaska T12 Snap Shackles are perfect for applications requiring high strength and low weight. They have a breaking strength of 12,000 lbs and weigh only 5.6 ounces in the standard bail configuration. Ideal for 30 to 45 foot boats.

The T20 is a larger shackle designed for mid to large sized boats. They are popular on the America's Cup racing circuit. The T-20 has a breaking strength of 20,000 lbs. Standard bail configurations weigh only 11.9 oz. Ideal for 40 to 70 foot sailboats.

The Tylaska T30 is designed for large sailboats that need to support strong loads. With a breaking strength of 30,000 pounds, this shackle can handle sail loads on the largest of sailboats. A number of around-the-world racing teams utilize the T30.

Tylaska T50 Snap Shackles are the largest trigger-type snap shackle ever made. They can be opened using either a trigger or lanyard. A lanyard allows for remote operation - ideal for towing applications. The locking pin provides extra security from accidental release.
