Product Description
Maggie’s Soap Nuts are the only laundry soap that literally grows on trees!

For a long time now we have been looking for a laundry soap that really works, is green, and doesn't come in a big, space-wasting plastic jug that might find it's way into the water.

Having found Maggie's Soap Nuts our search is over.

For those of you who have never heard of soap nuts it probably sounds crazy to think that soap could possibly come from a tree.

However, for centuries, soap nuts - which are actually the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry tree - have been used to keep fabrics clean.

These cool little nuts - which resemble a hard, oversized raisin - contain saponin, an all natural compound that not only cleans your laundry, but also acts as a very effective fabric softener.

In fact, since they are such a gentle cleanser, soap nuts are ideal for delicate fabrics like wool and silk.

Soap nuts are easy to use.

Simply put a few nuts into the cotton cinch sack that is included with each order and drop the sack into your washing machine, hand washing tub, or whatever device you use to do laundry.

As the water and clothes are agitated the soap nuts release their saponin and go to work, separating the dirt from your precious fabrics.

When using hot water you only need two soap nuts for a regular load of laundry. Since hot water draws the saponin out of the nuts faster than cold water you will usually get one load done per batch.

If using cold water, or doing an extra large or extra dirty load you might need to add a couple more nuts. Cold water washes not only save hot water and the energy needed to heat it, but your soap nuts will usually last up to 4 cycles if you keep things cool.

Once the nuts no longer feel soapy after a wash you'll know they are done.

Some folks even boil down soap nuts to create their own all natural liquid soap.

Instead of having a bulky, plastic laundry soap bottle to get rid of you can feel good throwing these little nuggets over the side, in your compost bin, or in the regular trash -after all, THEY'RE NUTS! (well, dried fruit technically, but we couldn't resist throwing that one in.)

To keep soap nuts fresh we ship them in a plastic pouch. For folks who don't want plastic anywhere near the water we recommend transferring them to an airtight container like the glass jars we carry. If left exposed to the air soap nuts turn black and sticky. This change does not affect their cleaning power, it just makes the nuts a little less attractive.

Maggie’s Soap Nuts are 100% natural, safe and hypoallergenic.

In addition to all these remarkable features, the harvest of soap nuts is a very sustainable and positive activity. Primarily found in India and Indonesia, soap nuts are gathered by local farmers and families once they ripen and fall to the ground.

Like many tropical species, Soapberry trees can easily fall victim to loggers or indigenous people in need of firewood.

The folks at Maggie's try to prevent this deforestation by reserving harvests for years in advance, thereby giving the locals a guaranteed income stream and a big incentive to take care of their trees.

Maggie's does not test on animals, donates 10% of their net proceeds to groups that share their values, employs fair labor practices, and above all, promises to act in harmony with life and Nature.

All in all, soap nuts are a product you can feel good about for so many reasons.

Do yourself and the Planet a favor, give Maggie's Soap Nuts a try.

Turtle Back Cellulose Sponge
Reg. Price: $3.49
Our Turtle Back cellulose sponge is the perfect tool for all your boat cleaning needs.

Our top of the line sponges work hard, wear well, and they float!

The turtle back has a unique, curved shape that some people find easier to hold than rectangular sponges.

Measures 8" x 3 3/4" x 2 1/8".

These days sponge buyers have three main options to choose from.

Most of the cheap sponges out there are made from a soft plastic material, very ungreen, and not available here.

Natural sponges are tough, unique looking and work well. Unfortunately there are some very big questions about the sustainability of the world's sponge fisheries. Until this issue is resolved we choose not to add to the pressure.

Cellulose is a natural material derived from wood. While the production of any forest product clearly has an environmental impact, we feel cellulose sponges are the most environmentally friendly choice available.

To reduce our packaging impact we order our sponges direct from the factory without any plastic wrappers. This sometimes results in a sponge being sent to you that has dried out, feels hard and looks funny. Just add a little water and they snap right back to what you would expect.

Sold in singles at $3.49 and at $2.99 for 12 or more.
