Our organic cotton socks are made by ECOLUTION, one of the most responsible companies we know. Here is their story.

In our 16 years of doing business ECOLUTION® has stood out as a company that has refused to compromise its core values of real sustainability in every step of our manufacturing. Whether it is organic cultivation, chemical free processing, eco-friendly dyes and finishes, or the way that we treat our employees, ECOLUTION® does not allow any negative practices into the chain of production and distribution of our products. During our 16 years we have been exclusively dedicated to our vertically integrated operations in Eastern Europe, making products only from hemp, and hemp flax blends. We have resisted the temptation to move our production to China, a path that most of our competition has followed, because there is little or no way to ensure that Chinese production is being carried out in a socially or environmentally responsible manner. We refuse to sacrifice our values for lower costs.

In the autumn of 2006 ECOLUTION® released a line of organic cotton and bamboo products made in India. We have decided to move forward with our partners in India because they have proven to be among the most stellar, environmentally and socially responsible manufacturers not only in the region, but that we have found period.

So why should you spend the extra money to buy organic cotton? Without trying to sound too preachy, the following statistics can be summed up in a few words - Because it's the right thing to do.

For those who want the facts-

The fabric of our lives, or the fabrication of lies?

Perhaps more than any other agricultural product, short-staple upland cotton (which accounts for 97% of USA cotton production) is the number one charlatan of our era.

Enormous sums of money have been spent on advertising and promotion to convince us that cotton is this wonderful, natural product that we all should support and purchase.

Next to corn, cotton is the largest agricultural product in the United States.

The USA grows approximately 14 million acres of cotton, accounting for nearly 20% of the world’s supply. The tremendous expansion of cotton production in the past dew decades has been accompanied by a proportionate increase in ecological damage, social deterioration and government malfeasance. Here are a few things to remember the next time you slip on one of your favorite cotton shirts -

Each year, nearly $2.6 billion worth of pesticides are applied to cotton fields worldwide, with approximately 35% of the total ending up on USA fields. In 2000, farmers in the main USA cotton growing states used over 75 million pounds of pesticides.

These figures are easily "slipped under the radar" due to the misconception that cotton is not a food, so people are relatively unconcerned by this massive chemical use.

The fact is that cotton is an important food product. In the USA alone, nearly 7 million pounds of cotton seed a year is used for cattle feed, both meat and dairy, as well as for the cottonseed oil commonly used in margarine, cookies, chips and other processed foods. As we ingest the products related to cotton in large quantities, there is a natural concern for our health and the health of future generations.

The unified cotton industry represents a $60 billion a year sector of our economy. It doesn’t take much of an imagination to realize the power the National Cotton Council wields in Washington. So far, seed and chemical companies have not been held responsible for damage caused by chemical runoff, water poisoning, gene transfer and other forms of pollution, potentially saving them billions of dollars.

The U.S. government’s cotton subsidy program (established in the 1930's) creates huge economic benefits for industrial cotton growers in the form of contract payments and non-recourse government and banking loans. Who pays for all of this? You guessed it: the U.S. General Accounting Office estimates the American taxpayer pays out approximately $1.1 billion a year; and the cost is going up.

We could go on educating you about the state of the cotton industry, but since you’re online, you can do some research and find out the truth about cotton for yourself.

Besides, you’re here to buy our organic cotton shirts. Thank you for reading this far and hopefully you will begin to become the difference and help us turn the tide of this horrible tragedy of industrial agriculture.

What possible difference will it make if you buy an organic cotton hat instead of a non-organic cotton hat?

After all, cotton is a natural fabric right?

The simple answer to the first question is "a lot".

The answer to the second is, "not anymore".

If there is one action you can take to be more environmentally friendly, changing your shopping choices to include organic cotton can have a tremendous positive impact on both the Planet, and quite possibly your health.

As soft and comfy as cotton is, the cultivation of non-organic cotton is a toxic nightmare. Over one quarter of all the pesticides used in modern agriculture are applied to the modern cotton plant.

This stuff contains some of the nastiest compounds known to man, including cyanide. Of the nine major pesticides used on cotton five are proven cancer-causing chemicals and all nine are classified by the EPA as type 1 and 2 - the most dangerous listing possible.

After so many years of growing in these toxins the modern cotton plant has been genetically engineered to the point where it is no longer a natural fiber, but rather a plant that is designed to stand up to the strains of the pesticides sprayed on it.

In addition to the obvious harm done to the environment by the cultivation of non-organic cotton, numerous questions remain unanswered about how this chemical laced fabric affects the human body.

We do not pretend to be experts on the science of this potential problem, however, common sense suggests that there might be something unhealthy about having your skin constantly touching non-organic cotton.

Enough said.
